Small groups of SS men were dispatched on special assignments - to kill jews, communists, Gypsies, political leaders, and the intelligentsia on the spot. Jews were usually concentrated in cities and other urban settings so it was easy for an advancing army to stun them and take them hostage with no problems whatsoever. There were five stages to the killing and they were: Invasion,the roundup of Jews and other intended victims,the rounded up people were taken to the outskirts of the city and shot, the bodies were then taken to mass graves and buried, until the next massicure when another layer of bodies was buried. More than 1.2 million Jews were killed before this phase of killing ended. The bodies of the dead who were not burned alive or cremated were piled high in mass graves throughout the occupied Soviet territories In response to: Read and report on Mobile Killing Squads (Einsatzgruppen).
