Ghettos were used to control the large Jewish population by forcing Jews to reside in marked-off sections of towns and cities. The ghettos were usually the most run down sections of the city. The Nazis called them "ghettos" or "Jewish residential quarters." Many ghettos were surrounded by walls with barbed wire. Altogether the Germans established up to 400 ghettos in all of their occupied territories. The largest ghetto was in Warsaw, the Polish capital, where almost half a million Jews were confined. In response to: Research and write about ghettos, such as the Warsaw Ghetto.
