That's All Folks!

We hope you enjoyed our poems

Assessment

Firstly, since this was the first piece of directed writing that my class had done, I was looking to see who would and would not participate.   Thankfully, even my reluctant writer attempted the task.  I let the tables talk amongst themselves, and I was pleased with the individual attempts.  Only a few were out and out copies of their neighbours' work.  I assessed the handwriting as well as the content of the poems.  We have 4 levels in our reporting, so I made a four level rubric to go along with the poems.  As I expected, because the work was a first attempt, most children handed in a level 2 piece of writing.  I am excited that they will make much progress over the course of the year.

Apple Poem Rubric

Level 1 -refusal to write poem;  little or no effort attempted;  no sense of rhythm or poetry

Level 2 -attempted the task, following some of the teacher directions- ie. 2 desciptive words, 3 action words...; occasionally, chosen words had a feeling of rhythm but the sense of poetry was not often evident

Level 3 -generally followed the task as given; for the most part, chosen words had a feeling of rhythm, and there was some sense of poetry

Level 4 -task followed promptly and completely; chosen words always had a feeling of rhythm, sense of poetry always evident
