We read the story "The M&M"s Counting Book" by Barbara Barbieri McGrath. We discussed what a fact family is and created fact families for the number 12 from the story. I gave each of the students their own miniature bags of M&M's and they created fact families for the colors that they had the most of. Then, using Kidspiration (feel free to download template), they created fact families for the total number of M&M's in their individual bags. The students then gave their totals to a partner for them to create the fact family. The students then wrote about what they learned from this project.
