Chocolatina

My class enjoyed reading and discussing the story Chocolatina by Erik Craft. After revisiting the book, the students decided to write their own favorite food story based on a pattern found on the resource page for this particular project (Pizzadylan). After the students selected their favorite food to write about, I gave them a copy of the pattern story. Next, they looked at the pattern story and substituted their own names and foods in order to make the story more reflective of themselves. Students were required to write their story by hand first before they would be allowed to use the software program.

We went to the PC lab where students typed and illustrated their stories using Scholastic Keys Max Write. Writing the pattern story based on a Chocolatina activity was the students’ first access to Max Write. I demonstrated how to navigate through the toolbar and how to save their document to a specific location. After the demonstration, students worked independently typing and illustrating their stories. The stories were student edited, and will be bound and placed in the classroom library. Reading and writing the pattern stories was a very entertaining way to practice fluency!

Here are a few of their stories.

Story one, written by: Bailey
Story two written by: Brennan
Story three written by: Cole
Story four written by: Victoria

CHOCOLABAI

Bailey loved chocolate more than anything in the world. He loved it more than pizza, more than licorice, and definitely more than milk. Everyone called him Chockolabai. When Grayson asked "What will you have for lunch today?” Bailey always said, "Salad covered with chocolate." One morning Bailey looked in the mirror. He saw he turned into chocolate. He didn't want to go school. He was afraid his friends would make fun of him. When he got on the bus he was lonely and sad. He started to cry chocolate syrup tears. He started to drip chocolate all over the place.  He looked so good that the principal wanted to take a bite out of him. He was so afraid that he ran all the way home. When Bailey got home he made a wish.  His wish was to turn into a normal person again. His wish came true and Bailey was happy again!  This is a picture of Chockolabai on the bus!

COOKIEBRENNAN

Brennan loved chocolate chip cookies more than anything in the world. He loved them more than shopping, more than water, and definitely more than pizza. Every one called him Cookiebrennan. When Jordan asked,” What will you have for lunch today?” Brennan always said, "Jello with cookies on top.” His favorite kind of cookie was chocolate chip with chocolate fudge on the inside. One morning Brennan looked in the mirror. He saw that he turned into a cookie. He didn't want to go to school. He was afraid his friends would make fun of him. When he got on the bus he was lonley and sad. He started to cry fudge tears. In school he started to drip chocolate chips all over the place. He looked so delicious that the principal wanted to take a bite out of him. He was so afraid he ran all the way home. When Brennan got home he made a wish. His wish was to turn back into a person. His wish came true and Brennan was happy again.

HAMBURGER-COLE

Cole loved hamburgers more than anything in the world. He loved it more than milk, more than shopping, and definitely more than candy. Everyone called him Hamburger-Cole. When Grayson asked, "What will you have for lunch today?" Cole always said "An apple and a hamburger."  One morning Cole looked in the mirro. He saw that he turned into a hamburger. He didn't want to go to school that morning because he was afraid his friends would make fun of him. When he got on the bus he started to cry mustard tears. In school he dripped ketchup all over the place. He looked so good that the principal wanted to take a bite out of him. He was so afraid that he ran all the way home. When Cole got home he made a wish. His wish was to turn back  into a person. His wish came true and Cole was happy again.
