Our second grade class enjoyed reading several great chocolate stories. First we read fiction books Chocolate Fever by Robert Kimmel Smith and The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling. We discussed the similarities and differences. Next, we read The Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Fractions Book and problem solved how we would divide Hershey chocolate bars equally between students in small groups. We read the non-fiction book Smart About Chocolate, A Sweet History by Sandra Markle and illustrated by Charise Mericle Harper. The book has a lot of information about chocolate. We decided to complete an Inspiration web showing some of the history of chocolate as mentioned in the book. The class took a page at a time and discussed main ideas and details that needed to be included in our web. At the end of our study of chocolate the children wrote Important Poems about chocolate.

When we started the unit we took a poll to see if everyone in class liked chocolate. One out of twenty-two students in our class did not eat any of the chocolate we sampled during our study because he didn’t like chocolate at all!
