Our class is in the process of reading various "Cinderella" stories from different cultures, such as Yeh-Shen:A Cinderella Story from China, retold by Ai-Ling Louie, illustrated by Ed Young, and The Egyptian Cinderella, by Shirley Climo, illustrated by Ruth Heller. For our project, we first read Princess Furball, by Charlotte Huck and Anita Lobel. This story was extremely exciting to the students because they were interested in the title. It is about a young princess who is arranged by he father to marry an ogre, but she is resistant. She hides in a tree wrapped in a fur coat to escape the marriage, but is found by the king's servants. However, they don't recognize her. She works in the castle as a servant, and eventually wins the heart of a king who she happily marries. We then read the Native American version of Cinderella by reading the book, The Rough Faced Girl, by Rafe Martin and David Shannon. This story involves two jealous sisters and their "rough faced sister" who is basically a servant. In the story, there is an invisible being (represented by nature), which every girl wants to marry. The rough-faced girl marries the invisible being due to her pure heart, and becomes beautiful. As a class, we compared and contrasted both stories utilizing a venn diagram. The students also drew a picture of the rough-faced girl and Princess Furball in the proper circles of the venn diagram. Then, the students selected a character and wrote descriptive name poems regarding the book, Princess Furball. They also drew pictures of their favorite part of the story, Princess Furball, by Charlotte Huck and Anita Lobel. The class had the opportunity to read their name poems aloud, and display their work by collaboratively putting it on a bulletin board. The students and I thoroughly took pleasure in participating in this enriching project, and we hope you all enjoy it too. |
