Princess Furball

PRINCESS FURBALL

This Cinderella Story is written by Charolette Huck. It is about a princess who is told by her father that she must marry an Ogre. Furball does not want to marry the Ogre so she asks for bridal gifts that she thinks will be impossible for her father to deliver. In this variant of the cinderella theme, the spunky princess overcomes obstacles through her own ingenuity, rather than relying on the wave of a magic wand by a fairy godmother. We do not want to tell you the story, we prefer you read it for yourselves! However, we would like to share some of our activities.

One of the gifts requested by the princess was a coat of 1,000 furs. One students decided to do a "mini" research on animals found in the forest.

Forest Animals
by Michael

1.Kinds of Animals
2.Particular habitat of the animal
3.What the animal eats

Raccoon-They live in hollow trees, and eat nuts and berries.
White Tail Deer- lives in the woodlands and eats grass and nuts.
Flying Squirrel-They live in trees and eat tree buds, nuts, and berries.
Moose-live in the woodlands and eat plants.
Otter-lives in the water and eats fish
Beaver-Lives in a dam and eats bark and twigs
Wild Cat-Lives in the woodland and eats mammals.
Wolf-Lives in the woodland and eats mammals.

Here are pictures of two other forest animals:

Red Fox - Lives in a Den and eats mice and rabbits.

Brown Bear - lives in caves and eats amphibians, mammals, nuts, and roots.

We then pretended that the King had commissioned some of us to design Furballs new coat, made of 1,000 furs from forest animals. Here are 3 coats designed by some of the second graders.

Several childen did not know what an Ogre was, so one of our students did a mini research project on Ogres. He read a couple of books that had Ogres in them. Here is what he found out about Ogres from the few books that he read.

Ogres have no manners. They eat everything, including people and food. They are crazy and mean and they have big noses! They trick you a lot. They are huge, larger than grownups and they have lots of strength.

When the princess fled the castle to avoid marrying the Ogre she took her 3 dresses and her fur coat. She also took a ring, a thimble, and a tiny spinning wheel, all of which had belonged to her mother. The students were asked the question "If you were running away like Furball, what things would you take with you?" Here are some of their responses.

Our class also learned how to write what we call "The Do and Don't Poems." First, we brainstormed what we learned about Cinderellas - Princess' from the stories we have read so far. Then, we separated the list into do and don't columns. Then we put our ideas together. Take a look at our Cinderella - Princess Poem!

Cinderella - Princess Poem

Cinderellas love the King or Prince, But they don't love the stepsisters.

They Usually have to be back by 12:00, But they don't always make it!

They do lose slippers and things, But they don't lose their crown!

Most Cinderellas do not ride on broomsticks, But some do ride in Pumpkins!

Some of the Cinderellas like animals, But they do not like their stepsisters!

The princess does become a slave, But she does not stay a slave!

The Princess acts nice to people, And she would never bully people!

A princess rides in carriages, And she has not ridden in a car!

Cinderellas end up living in a castle, But they do not leave the castle a lot!

Cinderella stories are alike in many ways, But the ladies do not all look alike!
