Our class read the story "Cinderella
Skeleton" by Robert D. Sans Souci. It was very different from the
other Cinderella stories we have read. It is perfect for Halloween! Here
is the review from The Horn Book: "In this sweet tale of
corpse-meets-corpse, San Souci creates a bony heroine whose trip to the
ball has a distinctly Halloweenish cast. The plot follows the original
folktale closely, with one grisly exception: instead of retaining her
glass slipper, Prince Charnel gets her entire foot, snapped off halfway
up the leg bone. The potentially scary moments are made humorous in
Catrow's caricatures and dynamic compositions." Copyright © 2001 The Horn Book, Inc. All rights reserved |

Our Cinderella Activities After reading a traditional Cinderella story, we came up with a list of adjectives to describe her. pretty After reading Cinderella Skeleton, we came up with a list of adjectives to describe her. We were surprised that we used some of the same adjectives to describe the traditional Cinderella (because the two Cinderellas were so different). disgusting We posted both of these adjective word banks in our classroom so we can use them when writing in our journals. Next, Ms. Ross wrote the words "Cinderella Skeleton" on the chalkboard. We made a list of all the words we could make from the letters in the words "Cinderella Skeleton". Ms. Ross was amazed with what we came up with. We could have come up with more, but we ran out of room on the chalkboard, and Ms. Ross was exhausted from writing!

In Math, since the slippers were so important in both of the Cinderella stories we read, we sorted our "slippers" (shoes). We came up with several rules for sorting: laces/no laces We also made a human graph of our favorite version of Cinderella. It was easy to see which version was the most popular! |

Last but not least, we wrote an extension of the story.
We wrote about what might happen after Cinderella Skeleton and Prince
Charnel got married and lived in their kingdom. Our class dictated the
story to Ms. Ross and she typed in on the computer. Then she printed out
the story and we each drew an illustration.
Now that Cinderella Skeleton and Prince Charnal were happy in their kingdom, they danced all night, every night after dinner. Cinderella Skeleton soon had a baby girl. They named her Skela. Skela was cute and she liked to play. Her favorite game was “Break Off the Leg” where they would snap off her leg, just like what happened to Cinderella Skeleton. Then they would tie it back on and tickle her feet. Since she was a skeleton baby, her leg healed easily. Skela also liked to play with flowers, like the one that Cinderella Skeleton wore on her head. She dressed up in her mother’s dresses too. Skela liked to sleep, since she was just a baby. Cinderella Skeleton and Prince Charnal loved Skela. And she loved her family too. The stayed together in the kingdom forever. |
