I think that their mansion burnt down because in the book it said that the children were allowed to go to the beach as long as they were back before diner. So what I think happened is that their mother was in the kicthen cooking diner, when something caught fire and burnt the mansion down and causing their mother and father to perish. In response to: What do you think caused the Baudelaire Mansion to burn to the ground?
