Napoleon was exiled to the small island of Elba, banned from returning to France. France's enemies put Louis XVIII, the son of the previous king, on the throne of France. It wasn't long before Louis angered the French people and they longed for Napoleon's return.
Napoleon escaped from Elba, landed in France and started marching to Paris to re-take his throne. The King sent his army out to arrest Napoleon. They met on a road and Napoleon walks to within pistol range and says:
"Here I am. Soldiers of the 5th Line, recognize me ... If there is a soldier among you who wants to kill his Emperor he can do so."
The captain of the army ordered: "Fire!"
