This simple machine is similar to a wheel and axle.  It has teeth that lock together and make them turn at the same time, just in opposite directions.

     The tradeoff is also similar to a wheel and axle.  It takes more effort to turn the small ones, but it goes faster.  The larger ones take less effort but go slower.
