The Native Americans don't value gold, it doesn't mean anything to them.  Beads are valuable to them because they are symbolic.  The beads remind them of nature, fishing, and the spirits they worship.  Blue beads, like our bead, are the most valuable.

 The Europeans traded beads for things that are valuable to them, like this beaver pelt.
