The Mitten
by Jan Brett

snowfall.gif (4287 bytes)

Our class chose Jan Brett’s version of The Mitten. The state of Michigan is shaped like a mitten. Attica is located in the "thumb" of Michigan. Our class visited Jan Brett’s homepage on the Internet. We listened to her voice as she talked about her books. After we read The Mitten, we wrote our own short stories. We each chose the animal that we liked best. We wrote our stories as if the animals were telling them. Here are some of our stories and drawings.

MOLE

By Ashley

I was in my snow tunnel. Then I saw a white thing in the snow! I went inside. It was warm and cozy. I was going to take a nap. Then a snowshoe rabbit came. When I saw his big kickers, I let him in. We were nice and warm until a hedgehog came. When we saw his prickles, we quickly let him in. Then a big owl came. When we saw his big talons, we let him in. We all were squished. Then this badger came. When we saw his big diggers, we gave him the thumb. Next a big fox came. When we saw his shiny teeth, we moved over. Then a great big bear came. We didn’t think there was room, but we didn’t want to argue with him. Finally a tiny mouse came. She was comfortable on top of the bear’s nose, but it tickled him. Then the bear sneezed. AAAACHOO! Everyone flew in the air.
The End!

RABBIT

By Jacob S.

One day I was walking through the woods and I saw a big white thing. A mole was in it. He looked cozy so I decided to come in. Then a hedgehog came and we didn’t want to get picked so we let him in. Then a snowy owl came. We let him in because he had big sharp claws. A badger came along. He had diggers so we let him in. A fox came along. He had sharp teeth so we let him in. A bear came along. Not wanting to be left out in the cold, he peeked in. Who would argue with a bear? A small mouse came along. It was cold so he got the last spot on top of the bear’s nose. The bear sneezed and all of us went everywhere.
The End!

HEDGEHOG

By Jordan S.

One day I was walking through a field. I saw a white thing. There was a mole and a rabbit in it. I walked in the thing. It was crowded. Other animals came in. Then a mouse came in. An animal sneezed. We all popped out. After that a person got the white thing. The thing was gone. We all went to our own homes.

FOX

By Daniel E.

I’m Fox. I am just looking for food. Wait! What’s that in the snow? It is white and it looks nice and cozy. It looks just the right size. I am kind of drowsy. I’ll just walk over and get in. Hey, there are more animals! There is a mole, a rabbit, a hedgehog, an owl, and a badger. I thought I wasn’t going to be left out in the cold, so I started to crawl in. I think they did not want me to come in, but they scooted over anyway. I think they scooted because of my teeth. Next a huge bear came lumbering by. He saw the fuzzy thing I was in and he started to nose his way in. We did not want him to come in, but who would mess with a bear! Then a little mouse came along. It wanted to come in and it did. It sat on the bear’s nose. Then the bear started to sneeze! Finally, the bear let out a huge sneeze! We flew out of the fuzzy thing. When I landed, I walked away to find another place to sleep.

One day I was walking. Then I saw a big fuzzy thing. I ran toward it. I saw some eyes. They saw my shiny teeth. I went in. Then a bear came and got in. Next a mouse came and got in on the bear’s nose. The bear sneezed. We all flew out.
The end.

BADGER

By Katie M.

One day I was in a tree freezing. Then I popped out of the tree. I saw something white and fuzzy. I saw some animals in it. It looked cozy. Not wanting to be left out, I squeezed in. Then a fox came walking by. He wanted in, but there was no room. But when we saw his sharp teeth, we all moved over. Then I started getting scrunched. Then a bear came waddling by. He wanted in, but there was no room. But who would argue with a bear? So we let him in. Then feeling more scrunched a mouse jumped on the open spot. It was the bear’s nose. With a tickle from the mouse, bear sneezed. We all flew out!
The End!

BEAR

By Jacob G.

One day I was so cold. So I looked around and saw a big furry thing. First I nosed by way in. It was so warm. Then a little mouse came along. Then he was climbing up to my nose. He made me sneeze. All of the animals flew out and the furry thing flew up in the air.
The End!

By Kerri M.

I was walking in the woods and I saw a big furry thing filled with animals. I nudged my way in. Then a mouse came and sat on my nose. He tickled my nose and I sneezed and every animal went flying. So did the furry thing. I decided to go back to my den for a nap!

MOUSE

By Hannah H.

Once I was walking on a snowy day and I saw a fluffy thing in the snow. I thought I would like to get in. So I took the last spot, which was on the bear’s nose because all of the other animals took up the other spots. But as soon as I got comfortable, the bear sneezed and we all went flying!

MOUSE

By Amanda W.

Once upon a time I was walking in the woods. I saw a mitten in the distance. I decided to go in. I went in the last place I could find with all of the other animals. My whisker tickled a bear’s nose. He sneezed. We went in all directions.
The End!
