North Country Night

Standards

In this project on North Country Night, we addressed the following NYS Learning Standards for English Language Arts:

·         ELA Standard 1 - Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.

The students listened for information during multiple readings of the book and participated in consequent discussions that pulled out facts about the animals and environment featured in order to translate the written words into a painting that would represent both accurately.

·         ELA Standard 2 - Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression

The students listened and discussed the language chosen by the author to evoke the mood and factual information about the featured animals.

·         ELA Standard 3 - Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.

The students critically analyzed the rich written and visual information contained in the book and shared orally the information gained from analyzing and book rewarding the featured animals and their relationship to their environment; the students also critically analyzed the information and techniques the author used in the illustrations in order to accurately represent the book in the group artwork that was completed.

·         ELA Standard 4 -  Students will read, write, listen, and speak for social interaction.

The students listen and spoke in discussions with one another in whole and small group experiences in order to problem solve while in the process of creating the artistic response to the book as a group; decisions were made by consensus among the whole group in order to produce a piece of artwork that best represented the book.
