Mr. Popper's Penguins

Our class thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Popper’s Penguin’s by Richard and Florence Atwater. This novel took us ten days to read. Each day before we read. we took turns giving a brief summary of what happened the day before. After listening each day, we made predictions about what we thought might happen the next day. We often wrote our predictions on chart paper and kept a tally of how many of us agreed with these predictions. For example on the second to the last day some of us thought Mr. Popper would send the penguins to the North Pole with Admiral Drake, while others thought Mr. Popper would send the penguins to Hollywood to star in movies. We won’t tell, you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens to Mr. Popper and his 12 penguins.

After reading the novel we:

  • Used Kidpix to illustrate all the addition sentences and subtraction sentences for the number 12.
  • Illustrated our favorite parts of the story, used our keyboarding skills to write a sentence to go with our illustrations. Then put these pages together to make a class book.
  • Researched facts about penguins and compared them to things that happened in the story.
  • Made two funny class books, one about what penguins would say if they could talk and another about how we dress up to look as fancy as penguins do.
