The Snowy Day

The first graders at our school enjoyed participating in Frosty Readers 2005! I decided to write a webquest and ended up with the Frosty Webquest  to use in the computer lab with our four first grade classes.

We spent our first class period looking at the the webquest and then exploring the websites. Make a Flake was a really popular site in our classes. Before the children left the computer lab, we read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. The weather was cooperating with a new blanket of snow on the ground, so the students were excited to have a frosty adventure which would be shared as a story the next week.

The second week we used the Kidspiration template and planned our frosty story. The plans were printed and taken to the classrooms to use when writing their story. The stories were written and edited in the classrooms and brought to the lab the following week.

The third week we keyboarded the stories in Kix Pix and added a snowy background and some of the children began to illustrate their story. The fourth week we finished illustrating the stories and added a title page. During the last week we printed the stories to take home and made Kid Pix slide shows to publish on our school website.

Below is an example of a Kidspiration story plan and also some of our slide show which we exported as QuickTime movies. If you cannot view the movies, the QuickTime player may be downloaded at the Apple site
