We read the story The Gingerbread Boy retold by Harriet Ziefert. We
are also in the process of doing a play based on this story!
We did a shared writing about a gingerbread girl. The emphasis was
on characters and setting and how they can change the meaning of a
story. We changed the main character from a boy to a girl. We also
changed the setting from a forest to a jungle.
The
Gingerbread Girl
Once upon a time, there was little girl and a little boy who lived
in a jungle. They did not have any pets. Nope! Not even one! They
were lonesome.
The little girl went into the hut. The little boy decided to make a
gingerbread girl. He was lonely. When the gingerbread girl was done,
she jumped off the pan and out the door!
The Gingerbread Girl ran down the lane.
The Gingerbread Girl saw the monkey. The monkey said, "I want to eat
you!" The Gingerbread Girl said" Run, run, as fast as you swirl. You
can't catch me. I am the Gingerbread Girl."
The Gingerbread Girl saw the tiger. The tiger said, "Stop,
Gingerbread Girl!" The Gingerbread Girl said, " Run, run, as fast as
you swirl. You can't catch me. I am the Gingerbread Girl."
Next, the Gingerbread Girl saw a lake with alligators. She was
afraid.
The Gingerbread Girl saw the lion. The lion said, "Jump onto my tail
and I will take you across!" The Gingerbread Girl jumped on his
tail. Then the lion said, "Jump onto my back or you will get wet."
So, the Gingerbread Girl hopped on his back. The lion said, "Jump on
my mane, little Gingerbread Girl." The Gingerbread Girl jumped on
his mane. The lion threw back his head and gobbled her up! And that
was the end of the Gingerbread Girl!
