The Hat & The Mitten

Our class read the books The Hat and The Mitten by Jan Brett. We talked about how they were the same and different by using a Venn diagram and Inspiration 7. There were lots of ways the books were the same. Each story has a porcupine called Hedgie. Both stories have clothing that the animals use. The settings in the books were the same because they were both snowy. We loved the colorful pictures that predict what is coming next. The main character is a child in both books. Jan Brett must like animals, because there are lots of animals in each story.

In our class we talked about how The Hat and The Mitten were different. One of the differences is that in The Hat the main character is a girl, but in The Mitten the main character is a boy. The Hat has a clothesline picture at the top of the pages that shows what has happened in the story. In The Mitten the pictures only show what is happening now. The animals crawl into the mitten, but the animals wear the hat. Wild animals are in The Mitten and farm animals are in The Hat. There are no grown-ups in The Hat, but there is a grandma in The Mitten. We enjoyed reading these interesting books by Jan Brett.
