The Wild Toboggan Ride

After reading "The Wild Toboggan Ride" by Suzan Reid during our weather unit, we decided to write a transformation of the story. We have been learning about synonyms and antonyms, so we used lots of those to help us change the story. Some of the main changes that we made were to the characters and setting of the story. Since the main characters in the original story were a little girl and her grandfather, we centered our story around a little boy and his grandmother. We also changed the setting from the city to the country. We hope you enjoy our version of this story!

The Crazy Sleigh Ride  by Mrs. Madden's Class

A transformation of The Wild Toboggan Ride by Suzan Reid

The morning was crisp and noisy Ricky pulled his short sleigh to the top of the hill where Grandma Jan was standing stomping her boot in the snow.  "Come along," she smiled.  "I'm chilled to the bone.  Fiddlesticks to snow."   "Please, Grandma Jan, just one more ride..." pleaded Ricky.

Grandma Jan leaned over to give Ricky one last push on his short sleigh.  As she bent over, she stepped on her extra-long scarf and her foot slipped.

Bam!  Ouch!  Bang!

Grandma Jan landed on the front of the short sleigh with Ricky on her lap.

"Yahoo!" yelled Ricky.  "Good grief!" gasped Grandma Jan.  "How do you steer this thing?"  Down the hill they went, gathering speed.  They reached the bottom of the hill and the sleigh swerved right. "Whoa!" sputtered Grandma Jan.  "I can't see a thing!"

Bam!  Ouch!  Bang!

The farmer crossing the field landed on top of Grandma Jan and Ricky.  Along the street zoomed Grandma Jan, Ricky and the farmer, all on the short sleigh.

Bam!  Ouch!  Bang!

The horse eating hay landed on top of the farmer.  "Heavens!  Find your own spot!" said the farmer.  "Quiet down up there! I can't see a thing!" yelled Grandma JanAcross the field and into the barn went Grandma Jan, Ricky, the farmer and the horse, all on the short sleigh.

Bam!  Ouch!  Bang!

The chickens, laying eggs, landed on top of the horse.  "Get your foot off my mane!" said the horse.  "Move up! We're getting squished back here!" called the farmer.  Through the barn, across the fields, and into the house whizzed Grandma Jan, Ricky, the farmer, the horse, and the chickens, all on the short sleigh.

Bam!  Ouch!  Bang!

The sleigh flew into the house, where the farmer's wife was cooking dinner.  She landed on top of the chickens.  The sleigh flew out of the house and into a snowbank.  Grandma Jan, Ricky, the farmer, the horse, the chickens, and the farmer's wife went tumbling in every direction.  Grandma Jan and Ricky landed in a chicken coop.  The farmer and the horse landed in the pigsty.  The chickens and the farmer's wife landed in a feeding trough

For a moment nobody moved.  Everything was quiet.  Then Grandma Jan and Ricky leaped out of the chicken coop.  The farmer and the horse crawled out of the pigsty.  The chickens and the farmer's wife clambered out of the feeding troughGrandma Jan grabbed the sleigh and began to run across the field.  Everyone followed.

"Wait, Grandma Jan!  Where are you going?" yelled Ricky.   "If we hurry we can get in one more ride before dark," called Grandma Jan.
