Melinda Sordino is a 9th grader that has been the victim of a
horrible tragedy. She becomes so withdrawn that she becomes a loner. She
has no friends and her parents don’t seem too concerned about her. Then
the truth comes out and everyone knows about what has happened to her.
Melinda begins to open up while working on an art project about trees.
Melinda’s parents are the average parents of our society. They both work hard to make ends meet,
but somehow seem to miss out on a life-changing situation that has
occurred to their daughter.Although her parents seem to recognize that there is something
wrong, neither one ever takes the initiative to find out what it is.
Rachel Bruin, Melinda’s ex-best friend tries to change her style once in
high school. She joins up with the exchange students. Eventually,
Melinda tries to confide in Rachel about the rape, only to have Rachel
turn her back on her once again.
Mr. Freeman, the cool art teacher, is where Melinda finds sanctuary. He
doesn’t judge her and wants her to be herself in his class. Mr. Freeman
pushes Melinda to express who she is during her project about a tree.
