To begin our study of autumn, we
went on a scavenger hunt around our school grounds. We visited the courtyard area first,
then the nature trail and finally, the butterfly garden. We found different types of
vegetation and noted their colors and blooms. We talked briefly about what causes the
leaves to be green (photosynthesis). We observed the kinds of butterflies and caterpillars
present in the butterfly garden. In a few weeks we will repeat our scavenger hunt and compare our observations. Because we are in the Deep South, we have just this week begun to have cooler temperatures at night. Our days are still very warm. The leaves will not begin to turn colors until later in October. At that time we will do some research to find out why the leaves are changing colors. Our October project will be a leaf collection. We will culminate our study of autumn and our communitys history and architecture with a field trip to Pebble Hill Plantation, where we will tour the main house, the grounds and gardens, and ride in a horse-drawn wagon. We have written diamond poetry about various activities that take place in our area in the fall. |
