Autumn Observations

Hurricanes

There is a hurricane in town,
Blowing down spooky houses
And scarry trees.
Birds were nowhere to be found.

by Danielle P.

Hurricanes

Hurricanes
Swirl around town.
Letting you know
That you should frown.
Swirling around town,
Swirling around town,
Swirling around town,
And knocking things down.

Hurricanes

Swirling around the town
Blowing fences down
Blowing trees down.
Waves are high,
Knocking houses down.
Black Clouds in the sky.
Why?
It's a hurricane.

And blowing branches down.

The Hurricane

The hurricane came to town,
And had to let some trees fall down.
And the hurricane blew,
Some homes down too!

Clouds and rain,
Swelling waves,
Make a hurricane.
Around town,
Trees blow down
On cars, on trailer houses.
Telephone wires leave sparks
All over the town.

The Bad Weather

The weather is bad today.
The clouds are getting black.
I think there is a storm coming.
I hope it isn't a tornado or lightning.
It's not a storm.
It's just a little rain.

The Hurricane

  The trees were blowing,
It was raining hard. I should have a flashlight
If the lights go out.
I could use the flashlight
At night,
In case I can't see.

Assessment

As part of the science curriculum we are discussing signs of fall.  Fall is hurricane season.  During Hurricane Floyd the class tracked his path up the coast of the USA using the Internet and weather reports on TV. We wrote down poems from our observations.  In addition to this we wrote poems based on fall colors. I assessed their poetry based on descriptive phrases that painted a clear picture in the reader's mind.  Some children chose to rhyme their poems which demonstrates auditory discrimination.
