            GOING BATTY

The first grade students of Mrs. Abraldes and Miss Barbaro's class at Taylor Avenue Early Childhood Center had fun studying all about bats. We learned about where bats live, what kinds of foods they eat, and how they use echolocation to help them find their food. We were shocked to learn that there are 1,000 different kinds of bats that come from all over the world and vary greatly in size.
We had a lot of fun reading Stellaluna and Bats-Creatures of the Night. We also watched The Magic School Bus' Going Batty. Oh!  That Miss Frizzle and her field trips!!!!!  Miss Barbaro built a big bat cave in our room for us to visit and use as a quiet place to read more about bats. There a lot of bats in our cave, all hanging upside down. Each bat has a fact that we have learned about them on their wing. We did research and wrote about what we learned, for you to read. We hope you learn as much about bats as we did.
We would like to thank Mrs. Silverman of Clinton Avenue School for
inviting us to be a part of this project.

            HAVE A BATTY GOOD TIME!!!!!!!

There are about 1,000 different kinds of bats in the world.  If bats wake up in the middle of winter they can starve to death.  Bats find food using echolocation.  Did you know that bats are mammals and they are the only mammal that can fly?  It is true.

Vampire bats only drink a little of blood and you wouldn't feel it.  Don't worry they won't suck your blood, only cow's blood.  They make noise to see and feel.  The noise comes back to them, and then they know that there is something in their way, like a tree.

Bats are mammals.  They are very inteeresting.  Bats make noise and you can't hear it.  The noise helps the bats catch insects by locating them.  Bats sleep upside down during the day.   Bats sleep in a cave.  You should not be afraid of them.

There go some bats.  Bats are mammals.  They sleep upside down and they are nocturnal.  Bats can fly.   Bats are all different sizes.  The smallest bat is the Kitti's Hog-nosed bat.   The largest bat is the Flying Fox bat.  I learned a lot about bats.  Did you?  If you would like to learn more about bats go to your local library.   There you will find more bat information from books.  You can also find more about bats on the Internet.

Bats are night creatures.   All bats are mammals.  The Ghost bat's fur is white and its thumbs are yellow.   It has yellow ears.  It also has a yellow nose and tan wings.  That's all about the Ghost bat.  This is a particular bat that I wrote about, but there are thousands of others you can learn about.

by Corinne

EEK...EEK...Did you hear that?   It is a bat.  Bats fall into two main groups: megachiroptera, which are large bats: and microchiroptera, or small bats.  Each species of bat has it's own look, size, shape and color.  In South America bats are fish eaters.  When a fish comes to the surface or breaks out of the water, the bat swoops down and hooks the fish with the claws on its feet.  They are great.

EEK...EEK...What is that sound?   That is a bat eeking in a cave.  It is dark there.  They sleep upside down when they are sleeping.  The cave is black as a thunderstorm.  Bats are very important because whatever type of bug you are allergic to, the bat could eat it.   I like bats.  Do you like bats?  I hope you like bats.  They fly in the dark.  I must be going because I have more bat things to do.  See you later, bye-bye.  Oops I forgot!  Remember that they are important.  Bye-bye.
