Objectives
This Internet Workshop will introduce you to the issue of food safety as a part of our unit on the digestive system. You will have the opportunity to explore important resources on the Internet for our unit. You will learn to think more critically about what you read on the Internet. Take notes in your notebook and share them at our workshop session.
Facts About Food Born Illnesses 1. Please visit “Food Safety Lessons: Lesson 1” at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsafety/Lesson/L1/L1p1.html. Read about food born illnesses, locate the following information and write it down in your notebook: · Symptoms (or signs) of food born illnesses. · The cause of the illness. · Ways to avoid food born illness. · Ways to avoid a food born illness.
Causes of Food Born Illnesses 2. Take notes in your notebook on the various causes of food born illnesses as described in the Food Safety Lesson at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsafety/Lesson/L1/L1p1.html. Pretend you are a restaurant manager. What would you do in your restaurant to prevent your customers from getting sick from food born illnesses? Please be ready to share your thoughts at our workshop session.
Critical Thinking 3. Many groups have taken action to help educate others about food safety. Please go to the Partnership for Food Safety Education’s Success Stories at http://www.fightbac.org/success_stories.cfm. Read the success stories of others. Which program do you think would be the most useful in helping elementary and middle school students practice food safety? Write down your thoughts and be prepared to share them at our next workshop meeting.
4. Choose one of the two websites we visited, either the “Food Safety Lesson” at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsafety/Lesson/L1/L1p1.html or the Partnership for Food Safety Education at http://www.fightbac.org/success_stories.cfm. Do a little bit of detective work (this might involve looking around at other pages located on the website) and figure out who is responsible for creating the website. How might this affect the information that is available on the website?
5. It’s your call! Choose one of the two websites we visited, either the “Food Safety Lesson” at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsafety/Lesson/L1/L1p1.html or the Partnership for Food Safety Education at http://www.fightbac.org/success_stories.cfm. You decide where you want to go and what you want to read about. Take notes of what you discovered and be ready to share your special discoveries with all of us at Internet Workshop!
