Shirley and Fred met us
at Auckland Airport. What a joy it was to finally see my friend and online colleague
in person! They took us to their beautiful home in Pauanui, on the Coromandel
peninsula. Along the way we stopped off at a fish and chips restaurant voted
"Best in New Zealand." David had fish, but since I'm a vegetarian, I had the
most wonderful kumara (New Zealand sweet potato). The drive to their home had breathtaking
scenery. Once we got to their town we walked around the beach, and took a ferry
ride. Fred is a scuba diver, and he harvested some fresh New Zealand scallops and
lobster for David. Shirley made me the most delectable vegetarian flan from local
produce. We had a lovely evening together and early the next morning they drove us to
Auckland Airport for our flight to South Island. We returned to Auckland Airport a few days later, to be greeted once again by Shirley and Fred. We only had a few hours in Auckland before our long journey home, so we spent some time together at the Auckland Museum. |

Shirley shared her knowlege of the Maori culture with me. Her students were very fortunate to learn about these indigenous people in her class. |
