Thomas' Snowsuit

By Robert Munsch

Ms. McNaughton, Ms. Vanderloo, Ms. Perrett

Riverview Elementary School

Sioux City, Iowa

Mrs. Vanderloo and Mrs. McNaughton teach in self-contained ESL first grade classrooms. The combined class population is one Vietnamese and thirty-three Hispanic students, 18 boys and 16 girls. The ESL students are bussed from their inner city neighborhood schools to Riverview Elementary to alleviate over crowdedness in the district and to help maintain equity. The first grade curriculum is followed for math, social studies, and penmanship.

The language arts curriculum has been developed based on what has been successful with students. Daily journaling, guided reading groups with Wright Group and Rigby books, lots of big books and LEA stories are the core of the curriculum. The students are grouped in a variety of different ways within the individual classrooms and between the two classrooms to enrich vocabulary and language.

Twice a month Ms. Perret’s fifth grade homeroom works with the ESL first graders. This gives the fifth graders a chance to interact with the younger students as positive role models. Activities done revolve around language development, reading, writing, and math. This has been a highlight each month.

The "Winter Wonderland" project was one of the projects done together. Once students were familiar with the book Thomas’ Snowsuit by Robert Munsch the first graders dictated their letters to their fifth grade friend. Below are some of our letters. We hope you enjoy them! A few have been translated in Spanish by one of your building ESL tutors, Ms. Lozano.

Dear Thomas,

You are very naughty because you didn’t listen to your mother when she told you to put on the snowsuit. You should be sorry for getting the principal so mad that he moved out of town. You should of put you snowsuit on when you mother and the principal told you to. Thomas, you should be happy to get a snowsuit. So when someone tells you to put on a snowsuit you will.
OK Bye.
From,
Your Teacher

(dictated by: Ruth, Jose, Reina 5th grade helper: Karissa)

Dear Thomas,

If your mom would buy you a blue one would you wear it? Or would you say no that is the ugliest one I’ve ever seen? If you do wear it you could go outside and make a snowman.

Love,
Your Teacher

(dictated by: Abraham, Chris, and Christopher 5th grade helper: Jacob)

Dear Thomas,

Why wouldn’t you wear your snowsuit like me and the principal told you? Why were you naughty in school? Why were you wearing your teacher’s dress? Why were you only wearing your underwear?

From,
Your Teacher

(dictated by: Eva 5th grade helper Cassie)

Dear Thomas,

It was not nice when you screamed at me and fought with the principal and I. The principal moved to Arizona and was mad at you. You shouldn’t of fought with us. You should of put your snowsuit on when I told you. Then the principal wouldn’t get mad at us.

Your Teacher

(dictated by: Rolando 5th grade helper: Shawn)

Dear Thomas’s mom,

Thomas was making a mess. Then Thomas was acting like a baby. Your son has been naughty at school. Thomas put on my dress.

From,
Thomas’s Teacher

(dictated by: Rigo 5th grade helper: Brad)

Dear Thomas,

Why didn’t you get in your snowsuit? Why did you get your snowsuit on after your friends called you? Promise you’ll get your snowsuit on next time. You made the principal move. Ask your mom for a jacket.

Sincerely,
Thomas’ Teacher

(dictated by: Mariela & Pedro 5th grade helper: Krystal)

Dear Thomas,

I am mad because you argued and fought with me. Thomas you were treating me, your mom, and your principal bad.

From,
Thomas’ Teacher

(dictated by: Minh 5th grade helper: Aly)

Dear Thomas,

Be good at your school and listen to your teacher. Thomas follow the rules and when your mom buys another snowsuit, put it on. Next time you will go to the office. If you don’t put your snowsuit on again the teacher will get mad. And if you don’t put your snowsuit on next time, you will freeze. If you don’t put your snowsuit on, you won’t have recess and you will stay inside and do work.

From,
Thomas’ Teacher

(dictated by: Cristina & Oscar 5th Grader: Jorge)

Dear Thomas,

Why didn’t you put on your snowsuit? If you moved to Arizona you wouldn’t
have to wear a snowsuit. If your mom got you another color snowsuit, would you wear it?

From,
Your Principal

(dictated by: Maria & Michael 5th Grader: Nate)

Dear Thomas,

Please listen to your teacher and mom. Please be good and don’t do bad things. Next time put your snowsuit on. Do good in school. Please don’t fight with your teacher. Listen to your new principal!

(dictated by: Cristian & Sindy 5th Grader: Ashley)

Dear Thomas,

I am very angry because you didn’t put your snowsuit on when yur were told. I am happy that it is summer now. Next winter will you please put your snowsuit on? Thomas, why did you make the principal go to Arizona? Now that the principal is in Arizona, all the kids in every class are doing what ever they want. I hope you listen!

Your friend,
Your Teacher

(dictated by: Jovanny 5th Grader: Danny)

Dear Thomas,

Why are you naughty in school? You are a very naughty boy Thomas. You should listen better. You will have to go to the principal’s office now. Why don’t you want to wear you snowsuit? You should be good Thomas or you will get in big trouble. I am mad at you Thomas. Be good!

From,
Your Teacher

(dictated by: Mariana 5th Grader: Ashley)

Dear Thomas,

Would you please put on your snowsuit? Didn’t you like your snowsuit because it was ugly like the ugly duckling? Were you naughty because you didn’t like your snowsuit? The teacher told you to put on your snowsuit.

From,
The Principal

(dictated by: Ricardo 5th Grader: Mike)

Dear Thomas,

You are a good student, but that was a bad thing you did to your teacher and me! You should of put on your snowsuit sooner so you could of gone outside. Next time will you please put on your snowsuit when your teacher tells you to, so I don’t end up in the teacher’s clothes and so she doesn’t end up in my clothes.

Your friend,
The Principal

(dictated by: Livier and Jessica 5th grader: Amber)

Dear Thomas,

You are very bad. You were acting like a baby. You are going to go in the Time out for 30 minutes. You’ve been mean to me and your teacher. Do you like you new principal? Well, where was I. Oh yes, you’ll have a new teacher because she’s here with me.

Querido Tomas,

Sinceramente,
Tu maestra

Tu maestra

(dictado por: Eva estutiante de 5 to: Cassie)

Querido Tomas,

Y si no te lo pones otra vez. te vas a congelar si no te pones tu traje no vas a tener recreo y te quedaras adentro a trabajar.

Querido Tomas,

No fue bueno cuando me gritaste. El director se movio a Arizona y el estava enojado contigo. No deviste haberte peleado con nosotros. Te deviste de haber puesto tu traje para la nieve cuando te lo dije asi el director no se hubiera molestado contigo.

Tu maestra
