Literature Circle Role: Connector: Connecting a theme in the chapter to life experience. Ch 4 Journal: A strong theme in Chapter 4 is being taken for granted. Everyone knows what it is like to not be appreciated. In Chapter 4 the children are careful to follow Count Olaf’s instructions. They take extra time to choose the perfect ingredients and to prepare the tasty meal, just right. They even go out of their way to make a delicious dessert. However, when Count Olaf and his theatre group return home their effort is not at all appreciated. I have had experiences when I have gone out of my way to do something special for someone or worked extra hard on something and not been given the credit that is deserved. Sometimes people are taken for granted in their personal lives; sometimes it is in the academic or professional lives that their hard work goes unnoticed. Chapter 4 is an example of being underappreciated.
