Mrs.
Chartier's Grade 1-2 Class |
What a hoot! We began our
study of owls by listing what we thought we already knew about them in our "Owl
Journals." Jeff's mom arranged a visit to the World Forestry Center in Portland so we
could learn about the habitat of some of the owls that live in Oregon. Rick was our guide
- we learned SO much about forests! Back at McBride, we wrote questions that we had about
owls in our journals. We had lots! Then we started to look for answers. We read books. Dan
from the Portland Audubon Society came out to St. Helens with a wonderful presentation -
slides, stories, things for us to touch and look at - he could even do owl calls! Mrs.
Kearsley, our library aide, brought barn owl pellets from her brother's barn in Pendleton
for us to dissect with our sixth grade buddies. The bones that we found were amazing! It
was so much fun to try to identify them. We looked on the Internet and learned even more. Taylor had given our class library a great "birthday book" last year. It's called "Tiger With Wings: The Great Horned Owl" by Barbara Juster Esbensen. It really had good information. Here are some of our poems, pictures, and letters to our Canadian keypals. We hope you enjoy them! |
